Welcome to the UConn HIPAA Resources page.

The University of Connecticut’s primary functions are education and research, not health care. However, because the University does have some offices, departments and units that engage in HIPAA-covered work and function as HIPAA-Covered Components, the University of Connecticut is designated as a Hybrid Entity. This means that some of our units as a whole, and select work conducted by some our faculty, staff and student are covered by HIPAA. This page is meant to serve as a resource guide for faculty, students, clients, patients and other members of the UConn community who are interested to know more about how HIPAA applies at UConn.

Can't find what you are looking for on this website?  Please call the University's Privacy Officer at (860) 486-5214 so we can point you in the right direction and answer your questions.

Please note that the resources on this page apply to HIPAA practices on the Storrs and Regional Campuses.  If you are interested in learning more about HIPAA practices at the University of Connecticut Health Center and its affiliates, please visit UConn Health or the Related Links tools above.

Who is Covered by HIPAA at UConn?

Each of the following units and below are considered part of the University's HIPAA hybrid:

* UConn Speech & Hearing Clinic
* UConn Fire Department

Collectively they are known as the University's HIPAA-Covered Components. The University's administrative services staff (such as IT services, legal counsel, audit, compliance and similar units) that provide services and support to these units are also considered part of the University's HIPAA Hybrid. Information and direct links to these units can be found below.

Individual faculty, staff and (in some limited cases) students who engage in work as partners or vendors of other entities covered by HIPAA are also considered HIPAA-Covered Components of the University when they function as "business associates" of those entities.
